Long was an unanimous All-American in 2007 at UVA, winning the Hendricks award as the best defensive end in the nation. His #91 is retired at the University of Virginia.

He played 11 seasons in the NFL, a majority for the St. Louis Rams after becoming their second overall pick in 2008. Long finished his career with 332 tackles and 70 sacks. He was awarded the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2018 for his philanthropic work to support clean water, military appreciation, and youth education.

Since his retirement, Long has continued to run his Chris Long Foundation, focusing on those three primary goals. His Waterboys organization focuses on providing clean water to those in need. He additionally hosts the Green Light Podcast with fellow Charlottesvillan Macon Gunter.
